Background of the Study
Code‑switching, the practice of alternating between languages within a conversation, is a hallmark of Nigerian linguistic identity. In social media contexts such as WhatsApp and Facebook, code‑switching is a common phenomenon that reflects Nigeria’s multilingual landscape. This study examines how users switch between indigenous languages and English to navigate different social contexts and to express complex cultural identities (Uzo, 2023). WhatsApp, with its informal and instantaneous messaging, and Facebook, with its broader public discourse, offer distinct environments for code‑switching. Users employ this practice not only for communicative efficiency but also as a marker of group identity and social belonging. The study investigates the patterns, motivations, and functions of code‑switching in these digital interactions, analyzing how the medium influences language choice and stylistic variation. This research situates code‑switching within theories of bilingualism and digital communication, highlighting its role in both preserving cultural heritage and facilitating modern discourse (Obi, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
While code‑switching is widely observed in Nigerian digital communication, there is a scarcity of systematic studies that compare its manifestations on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. Existing research often focuses on single platforms, leaving a gap in understanding how digital affordances influence language alternation across different social media. This study aims to address this gap by examining code‑switching practices in interactions on both WhatsApp and Facebook. The findings are expected to elucidate the interplay between language, technology, and identity, providing insights into the adaptive strategies of bilingual communication in the digital age (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze patterns of code‑switching in WhatsApp and Facebook interactions.

  2. To explore the social and cultural motivations behind code‑switching.

  3. To compare the influence of platform features on language alternation.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the predominant code‑switching patterns on WhatsApp and Facebook?

  2. What factors motivate Nigerian users to code‑switch in these platforms?

  3. How do platform-specific features influence code‑switching practices?

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the understanding of bilingual communication in digital environments by comparing code‑switching practices on WhatsApp and Facebook. The insights gained will be valuable for educators, linguists, and communication strategists aiming to appreciate the complexities of multilingual online discourse (Uzo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Code‑Switching: Alternating between two or more languages within a conversation.

  2. WhatsApp: A messaging application supporting private, real-time communication.

  3. Facebook: A social media platform facilitating public and group interactions.
